5 Signs Your Cabinets Need Replacing

|Greg Rojas

Cabinets are built to last, but nothing lasts forever. Here are the signs that it might be time to invest in a replacement rather than another repair.

1. Visible Water Damage

Swelling, warping, or discoloration near sinks and dishwashers means moisture has compromised the wood's structural integrity. Once water damage sets in, it only gets worse.

2. Doors That Won't Stay Closed

If your cabinet doors swing open on their own or won't close flush, the hinges may be stripped — or worse, the frame itself has shifted. Adjustments can only do so much.

3. Soft or Spongy Shelves

Press on your cabinet shelves. If they flex or feel soft, the material is breaking down. Particleboard shelves are especially prone to this after years of bearing weight.

4. Outdated Layout

Your cooking style has probably evolved over the years. If you're constantly reaching over things, lacking counter space, or fighting with poor storage, a new layout can transform your daily routine.

5. The "Band-Aid" Effect

If you've already repaired, repainted, or replaced hardware multiple times, you're likely spending more on maintenance than a new set of custom cabinets would cost.

What to Do Next

If two or more of these signs sound familiar, it's worth scheduling a consultation. We'll assess your current cabinets and help you decide between refacing and a full replacement.
